Step 1: Domain Name and Hosting
To get started, you first need to pick a domain name for your blog. You can choose whatever domain name you want; just make sure your domain name complements your brand.
Brainstorm a few different names, and then check on Bluehost to make sure the domain name you want is available.
You can check if your domain name is available right here.
You can also head straight to Bluehost, and enter your desired domain into the box that looks like this:
Once you have selected a domain name, it’s time to get started and pick a hosting package. I have the Starter Package because it’s the cheapest if you pay in one lump sum, and works perfectly for me.
Once you select your domain name and package, Bluehost will ask you for some basic account information, your package request options (screenshot below), and ask for a payment method. As soon as you have completed these steps, you’ll be set up with hosting, and you’re ready to install WordPress.
Then enter your payment info.
IMPORTANT: When I first started, I didn’t know that you only needed 1 shared hosting account for all of your domains. I accidentally purchased 3 separate hosting accounts. I quickly learned that you only need one hosting account for all of your domains. This means you can set up multiple blogs or websites under one shared hosting account. They will just share one main hosting account.
Step 2: Setting Up Account & Pick a Theme
Here’s how to complete the set up of your Bluehost account.
1. Select a password for your account.
2. Pick a Theme
As soon as you have created a password, you will be prompted to pick a theme. The free themes in Bluehost have come a long way since its inception, so a free theme will absolutely suffice. If you want something fancier, though, you have those options as well.
*I personally use the StudioPress Genesis Framework (this not a FREE Bluehost theme, but affordable, and comes with cool features and several bloggers use this framework). I use Genesis because it’s perfect for bloggers. It’s simple, easy on the eyes, and elegant. It’s also compatible with several other themes. You can also choose from any of the StudioPress Themes, and pick anything that tickles your fancy.
REMEMBER, you only need to venture out of Bluehost if you aren’t happy with the free themes, but the Bluehost FREE themes are awesome these days.
Step 3: Install WordPress
WordPress is the best blogging platform on the market for bloggers. It’s intuitive, easy to learn, and has the best plugins for those first learning how to start a blog or a website.
Here’s how to install WordPress.
1. As soon as you are done picking a theme, you will be prompted to “Start Building” your website. Click on the “Start Building” button and it will automatically install WordPress. That’s all you have to do.
*In the event you come back to install WordPress later, you can install by clicking “Create Site,” inputting the necessary information, and then selecting your domain name. From there, it will automatically install WordPress for you.
Next, you can start building your WordPress site by selecting what type of site it is, “business” or “personal.”
Once you have selected the type of site, you are officially in WordPress and ready to build your site.
You’ll notice you can “Add a New Post,” “Add a New Page,” “Manage” your menus, or “Install WooCommerce” (the last is only necessary if you plan to sell products on your website.
Alternatively, you can select “launch” and you’ll be asked to enter your site title and site description, and then you can begin customizing.
Finally, you can also start building your site by entering your theme and selecting “customize” theme. Customizing your theme is fairly intuitive and is where you get the chance to really make the website yours!
Anytime you want to login to the back end WordPress part of your website to make changes, enter your Login URL (www.whateveryourdomainnameis.com/wp-admin), enter your username and password, and you’re ready to rock and roll!
Congratulations on learning how to start a blog or website. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
