The Case For Travel Insurance While You Are Abroad
Let me tell you a quick story about the importance of travel insurance. A few years ago, my best friend and I went on the dream vacation for two recent college graduates–a backpacking trip through Europe.
It was everything we ever dreamed of. We started in Russia, then went to Ukraine, flew to France, and trained all across Europe for two whole months. We met cool people and saved money by couch surfing. We ate the best food ever, and gained 10 lbs (despite all of the walking around) to prove it. We danced in clubs. We saw the sites. We took pics. And, we kissed cute foreign boys, which was great, until…
…one of them gave me strep throat (I guess kissing cute strangers is actually a bad idea), and I had to spend one of my beloved days in Berlin at a German hospital, and I didn’t have travel insurance.
Sidenote to the travel insurance story
This sickness happening in Berlin was an extra big bummer for me, because I have dreamed of Berlin since I was a little kid. As a child, I had 2 German au pairs that I loved, I studied German all throughout Jr. High, High School, and college. Basically, I was (and still am) obsessed with Germany. So, yeah, spending time in a German hospital instead of being out and about in the city was torture.
But, it wasn’t as big of a bummer as not having travel medical insurance. Since I was a foreigner, I didn’t have the same access to German healthcare as a citizen would, so I had to pay my hefty medical bill, and wait to submit a claim when I got home.
And, let me tell you, it was a pain getting that bill paid. Think of how difficult it is to deal with insurance claims that you make within your network. Now add a foreign hospital into the equation that sends letters to you in German. As you can imagine, it’s terrible.
Anyway, if you are planning a trip, buy travel medical insurance before you go. It will make sure you are covered in the event of an emergency. It’s also designed for emergencies while you are traveling, so when you need coverage, or submit a claim, it’s not a big surprise that you are in Timbuktu doing who knows what.
